Earth Company Releases Survey on Climate Change Attitudes in Three Asian Countries, with the Support of Lively through “1% for the Planet”.

03/25/2025

Earth Company, a general incorporated association that Lively LLC provides pro bono support to through “1% for the Planet,” released a survey report on March 25, 2025 on climate change awareness and action in three Asian countries (Japan, Indonesia, and Singapore). Lively supported the data analysis and production of the report of the sustainability awareness survey.

In recent years, we have seen a significant increase in opportunities to feel the effects of climate change, and have been given the chance to rethink how each and every one of us should combat climate change. Under these circumstances, Earth Company has been focusing on the mindset, awareness, and way of being (Be) that influences our actions (Do) and has been conducting corporate training and other activities related to climate change for many years.

This survey was conducted to understand the current status of awareness and action on climate change, based on the concept that “realizing the connection between oneself and the world” is important for taking action on climate change. Specifically, through an Internet survey of people working for companies in three Asian countries (Japan, Indonesia, and Singapore), we illustrated the correlation between peoples’ mindset towards climate change and their actions.

・Target: Men and women in their 20s to 60s working for companies in Japan, Indonesia, and Singapore (general employees, managers, and executives)
・Method: Internet survey (anonymous format)
・Survey Period: December 2024
・Sample size: Total 713 (Japan: 300, Indonesia: 266, Singapore: 147)

・Japan has the lowest rate of implementation of actions on climate change among the three countries.
・There is a correlation between awareness of climate change and action.
・There is no significant difference in behavior by age group.
・Working adults with children or grandchildren tend to have higher levels of both awareness and action.

*1% for the Planet is a global organization dedicated to the prosperity of the planet and future generations. 1% for the Planet was founded in 2002 by Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard and Blue Ribbon Flies founder Craig Matthews to encourage businesses to donate 1% of their annual sales to environmental organizations. Members can support a trusted environmental partner and make a real impact on the global environment through their donations. Currently, the 1% for the Planet network includes thousands of businesses and more than 5,000 environmental partners, promoting environmental causes around the world.

In recent years, the environment surrounding us has become increasingly complex, with not only the escalation of climate change, but social fragmentation and widening inequalities as well. In these times, we strongly feel the importance of paying attention not only to our “actions (Do)” but also to our “consciousness/being (Be),” which underlies our actions.

This survey revealed the reality that action on climate change in Japan is lower than in other Asian countries. At the same time, however, we also saw signs of hope that people will naturally take action by overcoming indifference, irresponsibility, and helplessness.

With the help of Lively, the survey results have received a lot of positive feedback since its release. Based on these results, Earth Company will continue to strengthen its efforts to encourage a shift in awareness from “other people’s responsibility” to “my responsibility.”

The survey shows that Japanese people are less likely to take action on climate change than other Asian countries, and that one of the reasons for this is the relatively low awareness of climate change among the Japanese (in terms of perception, personal interest, self-efficacy, and sense of responsibility). The difficulty in changing consumer behavior in Japan has been pointed out in the past, but this report is the first study to clarify the actual situation from the perspective of “Be,” which Earth Company values, and we feel that it is something we would like many people to read.

Lively has been involved in Earth Company’s projects in a pro bono capacity since before the company was founded, and we are honored to be a part of such a meaningful and groundbreaking research project. We look forward to providing continued support in the future.
