Lively LLC and Nishika(Nishika, headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo, is led by Co-Representative Directors Tatsuro Yamashita and Hiroyuki Matsuda.) Corporation have signed a partnership agreement to develop and implement a system for calculating and visualizing forest CO₂ absorption using satellite images and remote sensing.
The two companies are working toward the development and implementation of this system, targeting Japanese companies that own and manage natural capital such as forests, farms, and wetlands. The system will be utilized for consulting and training services and the creation of forest credits. We will conduct a demonstration experiment with several companies that own forests overseas starting in May 2025.
Until now, many companies have had issues with accuracy, objectivity, and efficiency in estimating the amount of CO₂ absorbed by forests based on coefficients. This verification experiment will utilize both satellite images and on-site measurement data (teacher data) to understand the state of the forest through AI and estimate it through machine learning, thereby achieving a highly accurate visualization that is more in line with actual conditions. While reducing the burden of extensive field surveying, the system is expected to help companies understand the environmental value of their resources and convert it into economic value through essential sustainability management and carbon credit creation.
Through the development and implementation of this system, the two companies will support the quantitative understanding and utilization of natural capital and encourage companies to disclose reliable information and work toward the realization of Net Zero.
Nishika is very pleased to take on the challenge of visualizing forest CO₂ absorption through our partnership with Lively LLC, utilizing our AI and satellite image analysis technologies.
In this initiative, we aim to integrate diverse information, including satellite imagery and on-site measurement data, into an AI model to precisely estimate forest conditions and absorption potentials that have been difficult to capture using existing methods. We intend to solve the problem of “difficulty in understanding forest values based on objective data,” which many organizations have faced in the past, and to support corporate environmental strategies and the creation of carbon credits.
Together with our partners, we will continue to pursue the possibilities offered by technology to create new value and realize a sustainable future.
Lively, in partnership with Nishika Corporation, is leveraging remote sensing and AI to create a new way to change the “previously invisible” CO₂ absorption and environmental value of forests into something “visible” by using remote sensing and AI. This is an initiative to create specific value in the area of visualization of natural capital through the use of advanced technology. A mechanism to more accurately grasp the amount of CO₂ absorbed by forests will directly lead to the strengthening of corporate competitiveness in the areas of credit creation, nature-related risk management, and reliable information disclosure.
We are committed to co-creating a system to realize sustainable management from the standpoint of connecting technology, policy, and practice. Through the social implementation of this system, we aim to create a new foundation that will enable companies to accurately grasp environmental values and strategically utilize them.
Together with our partners, we will nurture the forests of the future and continue to pave the way to a sustainable and regenerative world, one step at a time.
